Thank You, Mr. Falker and The Bee Tree Literature Unit

By Patricia Polacco

Thank You Mr. Falker

Trisha’s mom was a teacher, so she grew up in a family who loved books. Once she got to school and started to learn to read, she had a lot of trouble. Despite how hard she tried, she was not able to learn to read like the other children her age. She was teased and discouraged. The other children were mean to her and called her dumb. Trisha learned to hate school because of this.

When Trisha started fifth grade, she was in Mr. Falker’s class. Mr. Falker made her feel special. He helped her appreciate her talents and also was the first teacher to recognize her inability to read and help her through it. Mr. Falker took the time to help Trisha read, and in doing so, changed her life.

The Bee Tree

Mary Ellen gets tired of reading so her grandpa takes her outside to search for a bee tree. The pair began chasing a bee, and are soon joined by many, many others. After they finally find the bee tree, they celebrate with some biscuits, honey, and tea. Mary Ellen learns a valuable lesson about accomplishment and working hard. Her grandfather helps her realize that like all things in life, reading can reap many rewards, such as adventure, knowledge, and wisdom, but she must also work hard to earn those.
