Where the Red Fern Grows Literature Unit

By Wilson Rawls

Can you think of anything you want so badly that you would work for two years, saving every penny to buy it? That is exactly what the main character of this book, Billy Colman, does in order to afford to purchase his two beloved and prized hunting dogs, Old Dan and Little Ann. Old Dan and Little Ann are redbone coonhounds which is a breed a known for its keen sense of smell, loud voice, and persistence. Billy’s dogs are especially brave and possess well-developed treeing instincts. They seem to be the perfect breed for hunting the ever elusive and ferocious raccoons of the Ozark Mountains. Billy and his dogs instantly become best friends. With the help of his grandfather’s stories and weeks of hard work and determination, Billy turns his pups into the finest hunters in the area. The fortitude of his pups is the precise match for Billy. These intelligent canines grow to enjoy a strong sense that they are hunting for Billy as well as themselves. They eventually win the coveted cup in the annual coon hunting contest, making Billy the proudest dog owner in the Ozarks. His joy at winning is short-lived as he follows his dogs into further adventures and peril. Read the book to see what lies ahead for Billy and the two best friends a boy could ever have.
