Jacob Have I Loved Literature Unit

By Katherine Paterson

Sara Louise Bradshaw has a difficult life, just ask her. She has a twin sister named Caroline that is beautiful, adored, and commands attention wherever she goes. Not to mention that Caroline is a gifted singer! Sara feels like she lives in her sister’s shadow at home, at school, in life. Sara takes comfort in her hobby of being on the sea, crabbing with her best buddy Call. She also enjoys spending time with Captain Wallace, a nice man who has recently moved into town. However, Caroline invades her space again when a flood strikes their town and Caroline steps in to help the three of them find homes for stray cats. As usual, she amazes everyone with her powers of persuasion. Once again, Sara Louise feels inferior.

The story chronicles Sara and Caroline’s relationship through the years. Eventually Caroline goes off to study music in New York, thanks to a generous donation from Captain Wallace. Sara stays behind to help her family earn money and generally care for her mom, dad, and ailing grandmother. In time, Sara realizes that she has to accept who she is and develop her own talents rather than always hiding behind Caroline’s shadow. As an adult, Sara becomes a very successful midwife in a rural town and marries a widow with children. They absolutely adore her for who she is!
