Up a Road Slowly Literature Unit

By Irene Hunt

Tragedy befell upon the family of Julie Trelling when she was quite young. Julie’s mother died when she was only seven years old. She was sent to live with her Aunt Cordelia, who was better able to care for her than her father. Aunt Cordelia is a strict disciplinarian who does not tolerate misbehavior, laziness, bad attitudes, or messiness. Consequently, Julie and her Aunt Cordelia clash at times. To make matters worse, Cordelia is also the teacher in the one-room schoolhouse in town. So, Julie never seems able to escape her Aunt. Cordelia does truly care about Julie and helps her through very difficult and troubling times. Eventually, as Julie matures, she comes to realize what Cordelia has done for her and what she truly means to her.

Students will enjoy this coming of age novel, particularly when Julie hits her teenage years. Though the story takes place many years ago, students will be able to relate to Julie’s problems. Jealousy causes the girls at school to bicker, a common problem today. Julie has a first boyfriend, with attitude and bad grades, and her family does not approve of him. She eventually finds real love with a childhood friend who has always had his eye on her.

The novel ends with Julie leaving for college. Although Cordelia will be very lonely without her, she encourages Julie to go away and experience life on her own, likely something Cordelia wishes she could have done herself. After all their years together, Julie finds it very hard to leave Cordelia and their very special relationship.
