Bridge to Terabithia Literature Unit

By Katherine Paterson

Jess Aarons likes to run. It is the one thing he is proud of. He spent his entire summer practicing so he could beat the one kid who was faster than he was. Much to his chagrin, on the first day of school a new kid arrives who is faster than everybody in the 5th grade…and it is a girl! Although you might think Jess would hate Leslie for becoming the fastest runner, they quickly end up becoming very close friends. Jess is fascinated by Leslie and her family. Jess’ family has little money and has lived in the same house his whole life. His parents are uneducated and he has lots of little sisters. By contrast, Leslie is an only child. Her family moved to the neighborhood from Philadelphia. Her parents are highly educated and they have plenty of money.

Leslie wants a friend and thinks Jess is great fun to be with. However, it is not common for a boy and girl to be best friends. To avoid being teased by other kids, they create a secret hideout to hang out in together. They call it Terabithia. It is located across a stream and they have to swing on a rope over the water to get to it. They spend hours there together creating their secret kingdom, telling each other stories, drawing, and reading. One morning, when Jess decides to go to the museum with his teacher, Leslie decides to go to Terabithia on her own. Tragedy strikes when Leslie hits her head swinging across the stream and drowns. Jess wonders how he can go on without Leslie until he realizes that the courage and strength she gave him will never leave. A very touching story!
