The Wanderer Literature Unit

By Sharon Creech

Sophie has a passion for the sea. She wants to sail across the ocean with her extended family to meet her grandfather. Her parents are apprehensive about her taking the trip but Sophie insists it is something she just has to do. So, Sophie and her three uncles and two cousins set sail from the east coast to England to meet grandfather, Bompie.

Sophie proves to her shipmates that she is a capable sailor. She knows a great deal about sailing and is quite helpful. She grows close to her cousin Cody. Cody notices that although Sophie loves sailing, she seems to have a fear of the water. He suspects this when he learns that Sophie has a recurring dream about a large wave. Also, when Sophie shares stories about Bompie they always involve him having a mishap in the water. Sophie’s other cousin Brian also suspects that things are not quite right with Sophie but he thinks it has something to do with her having been an orphan before being adopted by his aunt and uncle.

Sophie’s history is eventually revealed in this clever tale told in two points of view; Sophie’s and Cody’s. Sharon Creech is a skillful author who keeps the reader interested in the story by carefully sharing little bits and pieces of Sophie’s life throughout the novel.
